Fires Sink Ships in Strait of Hormuz, Off Sri Lankan Coast

 

Two large seafaring vessels caught fire this week, one, the Kharg, an Iranian navy support ship with 400 crew and trainees on board sank in the Strait of Hormuz after its engine room caught fire, and another, the Singapore-flagged MV X-Press Pearl cargo ship sank off the coast of Sri Lanka due to a fire caused by an apparent nitric acid leak, heightening fears than an oil and chemical spill might catastrophically damage the environment, especially for fishing communities.
