A strong, shallow, magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the mountainous northwestern region of China, near the border of Gansu and Qinghai provinces, killing at least 127 people and injuring more than 700 others, destroying homes, roads and knocking out communication and power lines throughout the region, one of the deadliest quakes to hit the country in nearly a decade.
