Nine civilians and soldiers died after the nuclear-armed nations of India and Pakistan exchanged fire in the disputed Kashmir region, in what India called retaliatory shelling from "unprovoked" civilian targeting by Pakistan which violated the 2003 cease-fire agreement, according to a chief army official.
