Cumbre Vieja Volcano Forces 5,500 to Evacuate Canary Islands

 

An eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa shot magma high into the air and pushed hot flows of lava into residential areas, destroying buildings and homes and forcing the evacuation of more than 5,500 residents from the popular tourist destination for the first time in 50 years.
