More than 800 people died and nearly 3,000 others suffered injuries following a "shallow" magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan with an epicenter 15 miles (27 km) east of the city of Jalalabad, according to the Taliban's interior ministry, destroying numerous villages, collapsing buildings and damaging roads, with authorities saying the death toll is expected to rise.
