Riots broke out at three maximum-security prisons in Guatemala after inmates took 46 security personnel hostage, and caused riots in and around the capital of Guatemala city, prompting President Bernardo Arevalo to declare a "30-day state siege," incidents which resulted in the deaths of seven officers.
