A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Philippine archipelago island of Mindanao, south of the country, causing a 3-foot (1-meter) tsunami on nearby coastlines, prompted flight cancellations and the collapse of buildings and homes in and around the hard-hit city of General Santos, killing at least 35 people and injuring more than 200 others.
